Recent damage due to localized flooding of creeks and streams has left some parks and trails in a state of disrepair. Work crews will be cleaning up mud and debris, removing downed trees, and assessing damage over the next several weeks.
The bridge access to Percival's Island will be closed from Monday, January 25 beginning at 6:00 p.m., and will reopen some time on Tuesday, January 26, after James River levels have receded.
Pedestrians and bike riders will not be able to access Percival's Island from Lynchburg during this period. Trail users accessing RiverWalk from Amherst County will be precluded from utilizing the bridge leading into Lynchburg.
Sporadic sections of other trails and parks are closed on an as-needed basis. The public is asked to obey all signage and report the location of downed trees or power lines, trail washouts, or burst pipes to Citizens First at 856-2489.
For further information, contact the Lynchburg Parks & Recreation Department at 455-5876.

The 12th Annual Fall Festival, Day at the Point, will be held on Saturday, October 10 from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on the grounds of Point of Honor, 112 Cabell Street in Lynchburg. Admission is free. The event brings living history, food, kid's games and crafts, period music, and more to Point of Honor each year. The historic home was built in 1815 by the Cabell family and is among the finest examples of Federal architecture in Piedmont Virginia. This year's event will feature a number of new presentations and activities.
At 10:00 a.m. the event kicks off with a dress parade of the Lynchburg Fire and EMS Pipe Band, bagpipers who evoke the Scots-Irish settlers of this area. Other music includes banjoist Corbin Hayslett, Celtic Music with Jim Robertson, and Riddle on the Harp, a women's group that plays a multitude of early instruments. New demonstrations this year include Lynchburg Grows, Piedmont Beekeepers Association, Friends of Rivermont, and Old Dominion Blacksmith Association. Tom Burford, noted apple historian, will give tours and talk about recreating the orchard at Point of Honor.
Interpreters will be in costume portraying Dr. George Cabell, City founder John Lynch, and frontiersmen. There will also be a presentation of mourning attire and customs of the day. A full size batteau, The Morning Star, will be on the grounds and there will be a quilt exhibit, fire making, bobbin lace, open hearth cooking, spinning and weaving demonstrations, and much more.
Both modern and historic kid's games and activities are planned along with a jump castle and the critters from the Nature Zone. Food will include Brunswick stew, barbeque, hot dogs, a bake sale of home-made items, popcorn, and cotton candy.
Free guided tours of Point of Honor will be available all day, and walking tours of the historic Daniel's Hill neighborhood will take place at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The public may also tour the exhibit, Medicine in Early Virginia, where Dr. Cabell himself just might be found dispensing medical advice from 1815.
The Gift Shop will offer 10% off during Day at the Point with many unique gifts, books, prints, and ceramics. Author Nancy Carter Crump will be on hand to sign her new printing of Hearthside Cooking.
Point of Honor is part of the Lynchburg Museum System. For more information, call 455-6226 or visit www.pointofhonor.org
