Governmental News and Events : Lynchburg Mayor to Visit Anne Spencer Home
Posted by lynchburgwebmaster on 2010/5/23 13:18:38 (60 reads)

Lynchburg Mayor Joan Foster will travel to Bramwell, West Virginia to honor noted Harlem Renaissance poet Anne Spencer. Spencer spent her early childhood in the West Virginia town before being sent to the Virginia Seminary and College where she graduated in 1899.

Mayor Foster will join Bramwell Mayor Louise Stoker at "Gardens of May" a celebration of the childhood of Anne Spencer, famous Harlem Renaissance poet on Friday and Saturday, May 21 and 22. Mayor Foster will be the special guest at a reception Friday at 6:00 p.m. and will deliver a proclamation declaring the mutual ties between Lynchburg and Bramwell.

Ann and Shaun Spencer Hester, daughter-in-law and granddaughter of poet Anne Spencer, will be among the special guests. Anne Spencer spent her adult life in Lynchburg. Her house and gardens are preserved and open to the public as a museum. Little was known of her connection to the small southern West Virginia town of Bramwell until recent years. According to the Bluefield Daily Press, Spencer grew up in a house overlooking the town and river. So great were her ties to the town on the Bluestone
River, she returned for her wedding on May 15, 1901.

Mayor Stoker will travel to Lynchburg on June 4 to celebrate the opening of "Annie's Pencil," an intimate look at the life, thoughts, and
feelings of Lynchburg poet Anne Spencer, written by Spencer's
granddaughter & playwright Shaun Spencer Hester. The production will be held at the Academy of Fine Arts and is a "Minds Wide Open" special event. "Minds Wide Open" is a series of special events and activities celebrating Virginia's tribute to Women in the Arts.
